Welcome to The Diary of Higgins & Haiti!

Hello everyone,

You will be glad to know that I have compiled the diary of my volunteer period in Haiti. It can be found if you click on the link below:
http://alligatorsontheroof.blogspot.com/

I hope you get a chance to flick through it or even have a read at the 1-28 posts (under September archive). I have ordered the posts in the reverse order (a blog usually starts with the most recent first) to allow you to read my account in the order that it happened - kind of like a novel. The only post which is out of sync is no.7. I have struggled with this for days and there appears to be some error which will not enable me to slot this piece of info where I wish it to be.

I am aware that you are all incredibly busy, so I will add a video clip which I have compiled all my fave images from my trip along with tunes that remind me of the special country and its people. This will basically tell you the story, without having to read it, if you so desire. I will also be adding a page for this blog on FB. Before you all groan, this is to allow me to keep my Haiti life and my personal life separate. If you do visit Facebook, please join this page to keep up-to-date with my news and future projects – the more hits I get the better. Or click on the 'like' button on the right hand-side of the page!

Check back once a week for news!

Once again, thank you to all you lovely, kind, generous people who made this adventure possible with your kind words of encouragement and support.

25 – Leaving party

Spider Attack 0 – MGH 1
It’s Sunday, the day before I leave. They have organised a farewell party for Eliza (GVN) Jake and me – this has never happened before. GVN invited members of the community who we had formed a relationship with but we really wanted to invite all the kids and give them a party. We had all this food and the kids were starving.
Woman beaten up day before returned
I cleaned up cuts and bandaged 4 kids
The translators had been going on about their trip to the beach constantly to the new group so most of them went away for the day. It was important the Justeland got to go this time as he was working when we took the others before.

It has been decided that the party would start at 5pm and this was the time the guests were told to arrive. One of the guests was Dr Robert who the new group had met this week and we were very fond of. He was also the lovely gentleman who helped keep ‘spider attack’ under control.

I had told the gang that it could take a long time to get to the beach, up to 3 hours depending on the road and potential breakdowns. I made them aware of this so that they would be back in time for the guests arriving. The first lot of drunk / hung-over people arrived back at 6.15pm and, by then, the food was cold. We hadn’t touched anything, waiting for them to return. They drank all the booze the night before, including Julie’s full bottle of gin leaving nothing for the party. This didn’t bother them as they were either too hung-over from the night before or had been drinking all day at the beach so didn’t want any more. The group was now 20 strong which is large enough for smaller groups to break off. We hadn’t had this problem with the original 6 of us and we had formed a very tight unit. I tried my best to keep everyone together as it was rude to our guests and we could all quite happily sit in the one area. This didn’t go down too well with the cooler people.
We ended up having a good night. I couldn’t drink more than 1 ½ cups of wine due to my medication, but I felt sorry for the ones who had missed out and deserved a drink – Chelsey, Katie, Julie and Molly.
Jake and Thuan staggered back to the camp at 7pm.
We talked about what we would remember about each other and what a memorable time we had shared together. I especially think Molly is a legend as I am not sure ‘Spider Attack’ would have had the same outcome had she not been there.
